July 9, 2021George Arthur Higgs, Past International Director (1978-1980), of Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia, died on July 7, 2021. He was 96 years old.A Lion since 1961, the late Past Director Higgs served as a 100% district governor, deputy district governor, council chairman, extension chairman, and a district Leo chairman. He also served as multiple district council chairman. For many years he maintained perfect attendance and his energy and passion to serve resulted in many new club members. The late Past Director Higgs was instrumental in the formation of the Lions Haven for the Aged when he was a property developer. He was known for purchasing as many Teddy Bears as he could to deliver them to the Ambulance for children in trauma. He arranged visits to the local nursing homes and elderly residents at Christmas and Mothers and Fathers Days to distribute gifts. PID Higgs supported Meals on Wheels and Guide Dogs for the Visually Impaired. Constantly thinking of ways to help, he organized a concert on the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne, raising funds to support those affected in Darwin, Australia after Cyclone Tracey devastated the area. Never thinking of himself as a victim during the floods in 1974, he organized aid, raising in excess of AUD$250,000.In recognition of his service to the association, the late Past Director Higgs received numerous awards including seven International President's Awards and the Ambassador of Goodwill Award, the highest honor given by the association to its members. He was also a Melvin Jones Fellow.Dedicated to serving his country, the late Past Director Higgs served as a pilot with the Royal Australian Air Force and as a Justice of the Peace.
