by Shelby Washington September 18, 2026LCIF’s Rapid Response to EbolaThe Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is facing the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak ever recorded. As of July 28, thousands of cases have been confirmed, including over 1,500 deaths. The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there currently is no approved vaccine or specific treatment.Containing the disease has been challenging. Ongoing violence and political instability have made it harder to identify new cases, trace contacts and reach people in need. With frequent interactions for trade, healthcare and family visits, communities remain at high risk of disease transmission. In these conditions, protecting healthcare workers and detecting cases early can make a life-or-death difference.Photo credit: Jacobin Mushabe“When we saw the growing threat posed by the outbreak and the gaps in protective supplies, we knew we had a responsibility to respond quickly. Our assessment identified an urgent need for personal protective equipment (PPE) and hand hygiene facilities in health facilities and border screening points,” said Lion Maureen Driwaru of District 411B.With a US$15,000 grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), Lions provided full-body protective gear, N95 respirators, face shields, soap, sanitizers, gloves and masks for medical personnel. “Protecting healthcare workers is essential because they are the first line of defense against Ebola,” Lion Driwaru said.Lions from Uganda also used over US$7,000 in LCIF grant funding to strengthen prevention efforts in Bunia, DRC, the epicenter of the outbreak. The grant will fund 26 contactless thermometers for help with early detection and 34 handwashing stations for four orphanages, one convent and nine government offices.“Emergencies do not wait, and neither should we,” Lion Driwaru shared. “Every timely act of kindness can save lives. I encourage Lions everywhere to continue standing together, supporting one another across borders and responding with compassion whenever communities face crises.”Featured image photo credit: Jacobin Mushabe
