New Computers for Students in Guatemala

In today’s increasingly technology-centric society, computer literacy is essential for both personal and professional success. However, access to computers and digital learning tools is a major challenge in many areas of the world.

The Cooperative Basic Education Institute (IEBC) in Mataquescuintla, Jalapa, Guatemala was facing a significant technology shortage. Their computer laboratory had only seven secondhand computers to serve approximately 300 students, severely limiting digital learning opportunities.

Despite staff’s best efforts to maintain the computers, their hardware was deteriorating with continuous student use and the software became obsolete.

District D-3 Lions saw the need for new computers at IEBC and sprang into action. With a US$4,869 District and Club Community Impact Grant (DCG) from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), the Lions purchased and donated 17 new computers, along with 17 desks and chairs to create dedicated workstations for each one. The equipment was delivered during a special celebration attended by students, teachers and Lions.

The upgraded laboratory has already made an incredible impact on the students and the school. Instruction across grade levels has vastly improved and enrollment is up for the next school year.

Parents, students and staff have expressed their gratitude. School Director Aleida Azucena Del Cid Valenzuela said, “This equipment was sorely needed to enhance the quality of the students’ education, and I am so grateful we were able to receive it. I will do everything I can to ensure that the staff and student body will take care of it.”
